Project COINS

Construction of Instructionally Sensitive Test Items

Instructionally sensitive tests or test items are able to capture the effects of instruction on student performance. The goal of the COINS project is to identify central features of instructionally sensitive test items that can be taken into account in the development of standardized achievement tests.

Tests should be instructionally sensitive in order to capture the effects of instruction on student performance. If tests do not sufficiently meet this condition, high quality instruction in the classroom might not be equally reflected in students' performance in an achievement test.

To date, there is little knowledge on how to develop instructionally sensitive test items for an achievement test. In particular, there is a lack of knowledge about which characteristics of a test item are essential for its instructional sensitivity. The goal of the COINS project is to identify central features of instruction-sensitive test items that can be taken into account in the development of standardized achievement tests.
