Adaptive Teaching and Teaching Quality in Differentiated Classrooms

The Ada*Q project aims to investigate adaptive teaching and teaching quality in differentiated classrooms at award-winning primary schools of the German School Award.

AdaQ_LogoThe aim of our project “Adaptive Teaching and Teaching Quality in Differentiated Classrooms” (Ada*Q) is to add to the research on productively dealing with heterogeneity in classrooms. To do so, we build on the expertise of schools awarded the German School Prize (Der Deutsche Schulpreis). We focus on primary schools with substantial classroom heterogeneity, where differentiated and individualized instruction is of particular importance.

Regarding adaptive teaching, we examine the fit between teaching and individual learning characteristics. Furthermore, we take into account teaching quality (i.e. classroom management, supportive climate, and cognitive activation). Adaptive teaching and teaching quality will be described and analysed at the levels of the surface and deep structures of instruction. We thus aim to find out under what conditions differentiated and individualized instruction is actually effective.
